When most people think about economic development, they picture ribbon cuttings, new businesses opening their doors, or companies announcing plans to relocate to a community.
While recruiting new businesses is an important part of economic development, it’s only one piece of the puzzle.
One of the Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation’s (BKCEDC) core responsibilities is Business Retention & Expansion (BRE)—supporting the businesses that have already chosen to invest in Kendall County.
What is Business Retention & Expansion?
Business Retention & Expansion focuses on helping existing businesses succeed.
At BKCEDC, we regularly meet with business owners, managers, and community leaders to learn what’s working, understand the challenges they’re facing, celebrate their successes, and identify opportunities where we can help.
No two visits are exactly alike because every business has different goals, opportunities, and challenges. Sometimes we’re connecting a business with a resource. Other times we’re discussing future expansion plans or simply taking the time to listen. Every conversation helps us better understand the needs of Kendall County’s business community.
Why Does It Matter?
Existing businesses are the backbone of our local economy.
They create jobs, invest in facilities, support local nonprofits and schools, sponsor community events, and provide the products and services that make Kendall County a great place to live and work.
While business recruitment often receives the most attention, many future jobs and investments will come from companies that are already here and continuing to grow.
Supporting those businesses helps create a stronger, more resilient local economy.
Building Stronger Relationships
Successful economic development depends on strong relationships.
Regular communication with local employers helps BKCEDC identify emerging trends, understand workforce and infrastructure needs, recognize opportunities for collaboration, and connect businesses with resources that support continued growth.
One way we strengthen those relationships is through our Business & Entrepreneur Spotlight video series. Visiting local businesses allows us to showcase the people behind Kendall County’s economy while highlighting the innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship taking place throughout our community.
Investing in Kendall County’s Future
A strong economy isn’t built solely by attracting new businesses. It also depends on helping existing employers continue to grow and succeed.
Every business visit provides an opportunity to learn, strengthen relationships, and gain a better understanding of the issues affecting our local business community.
Business Retention & Expansion is one of the many ways BKCEDC works to support the long-term success of Kendall County’s economy.
